Copy Trading Responsibly

Pick leaders on more than headline returns, and set allocation and leverage limits that protect you.

Copy trading mirrors another trader's positions in your account, scaled to the amount you allocate. It can be a way to learn from experienced traders — or a fast way to inherit their worst day.

Choosing a leader

  • Look past the headline return: a 300% month often comes from extreme leverage that will eventually blow up.
  • Prefer a long track record over a short spectacular one.
  • Compare returns with the account size — results on a tiny account are easy to fake by luck.
  • Watch how losses are handled: steady small drawdowns are healthier than rare, enormous ones.

Your controls

  • Allocation: the amount of your account that follows the leader. Your positions are scaled to it.
  • Max leverage: a cap on the leverage your copied positions can use, whatever the leader does.
  • Demo first: follow a leader with paper money to see how their trading feels before going live.
Example — How scaling works
Leader account$100,000, long 1 BTC (~$60,000)
Your allocation$1,000
Your copied position~0.01 BTC (1% of the leader's size)

You copy the proportions, not the dollar size — and your own leverage cap still applies.

Key takeaways

  • Judge leaders on consistency, drawdowns and account size, not peak returns.
  • Use allocation and a max-leverage cap to bound your risk.
  • Follow in demo mode before going live.
